Monday Mediocrity

It’s Monday. No one likes Mondays. Even as a person who has Thursdays and Fridays off from work, I can feel the weight of a Monday with the same acuteness as someone who is lucky enough to have weekends off. There’s a certain gloom and gravity that seems to weigh down the day, and just about everyone feels it. Garfield has even dedicated his life to avoidance of this day of the week. But what is it about Mondays that gets people? If you work or go to school Monday through Friday, you have an obvious reason to be bummed, as an entire week of work is lies ahead of you, but what about the rest of us? Does it stem from the years of a Monday through Friday schedule to which we became accustomed in school? Since most people don’t work weekends, does their depression about the start of the work week rub off on everyone else? What do you think?

I love Mondays. As a work at home mum, it is one of only two days of the week that I have where my preschooler is out at preschool, my oldest son is at school, hubby is at work - just me in the silent house for six whole hours. Bliss. And I get SO much work done. Roll on Monday I say!

People always get confused when I say it is my Monday (or Friday) when it actually isn't that day at all. I mostly get Tuesday and Wednesday off so I classify Thursday as my "Monday". It always feels like a Monday that day.

You know, it's weird for me. I actually have always found Sundays to be the day of the week that feels like lead in the pit of my stomach! I think it's a result of all those long boring church services followed by afternoons of nothing but Star Trek and Burt Reynolds movies on the two channels we could pick up on the rabbit ears when I was a kid!

Wow, I hadn't even read Sandman's comment and was going to post the same thing myself. I have vivid memories of hating Sunday from the time I was five years old. And I never had to go to church!

I don't care too much for Mondays either, but they're actually a relief after the long drawn-out hell of a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Friday nights/Saturday mornings are definitely the best.

"Long drawn-out hell of a Sunday afternoon"? I know you've got a love-affair with darkness and rot but come on.

I have only one issue with Monday, and it's not really Monday's fault. It's kinda like blaming Jesus for the actions of hateful people that happen to be Christian.

The one thing about Monday that makes me want to punt babies is: complaining about Monday.

It's everywhere. It's on your boss's lips. It's on your co-workers coffee mug. It's a caption on a computer printout of a sleepy kitten. It fuels complaints, but not incendiary well-constructed complaints. These insipid attempts at wit and humor ooze from the lips like rank spittle of a catatonic uncle who lost his DNR bracelet.

Perhaps you're right in that we've developed a distaste for Mondays because of the school week. I'm of the opinion that the gloominess we experience today is because that distaste is drawn out by these stupid comments, and we don't really develop our own opinion of it anymore.

I only dislike Mondays when I have something scheduled on that day. It throws off my whole week. I need Monday to recover from the weekend, get my house back in order, get my weekday routine started. My little one had a doctor's appointment this past Monday and I've been playing catch up all week!

Anyway, I love your blog. I'm a new follower from the Thursday blog hop. Stop by when you get a chance!
